John Edmund Mulaney- an American actor, writer, and producer. He is famously known for his work as a stand-up comedian. In the field of media and art, his chief genres are conventional comedy, sketch comedy, and surreal humor.

Most of the themes of his works are on everyday life, American culture, social awkwardness, and pop culture. He is an all-rounder who has done remarkable work at every platform of art and media. Theatres, films, stand-ups, and television, all these four mediums embrace the name of John Mulaney.

Mulaney’s Life – Then and Now

Early Life

John Mulaney was born on August 26, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois, US. He is the third child of his parents- Ellen and Charles Mulaney Jr. His mother was a professor at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, and his father was an attorney and a partner at Skadden Arps. He has two brothers and two sisters. While one of his brothers died.

During his early age, Mulaney was an altar boy. But from his early childhood, he was determined to go into the show business. When he was 7, he was offered the role of Kevin in Home Alone, but it got turned down by his parents.

He completed his junior year from St. Clement School, and in the year 2000 he graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep. He further studied English literature and Religion from Georgetown University. There at the school’s improv group, he met Nick Kroll and Mike Birbiglia. Later he went with Birbiglia on his stage tour, and this tour gave him the stage boost he needed.


The start – From the age of five, Rick Ricardo’s character from the program I Love Lucy, inspired him to become an artist. After graduating from Georgetown University, he moved to New York to start his career in comedy. Here he got the job as an office assistant at Comedy Central. Following year, he made a parody of “I Love the 80’s” as “I Love the 30’s”, along with his friend Nick Kroll.

Saturday Night Live – After some time he was offered a job as a writer in an American late-night sketch comedy show- Saturday Night Live. He also appeared on the show’s Weekend Update segments.

This show is among the most famous works of Mulaney. And he also got nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. He hosted SNL three times in 2018, 2019, and 2020 respectively. And became the fourth SNL writer to host SNL without being a cast member.

Other famous comedies – In addition to working at SNL, Mulaney worked 17 years as a stand-up comedian in various shows including Live at Gotham, Conan, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Comedy Central Presents, etc etc. His two stand-up comedy albums The Top Part and New in Town received great fame.

They were produced by Comedy Central and were released in 2009 and 2012 respectively. His third stand-up comedy, The Comeback Kid was released in 2015 on Netflix. His fourth comedy special, Kid Gorgeous was released in 2017.

This outstanding work of his became the award winner. At the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, Mulaney finally received the award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.

Mulaney as an Actor – He appeared as a star in a Fox sitcom, Mulaney. It is an autobiography of Mulaney’s life and his career. He also appeared in a comedy duo with Nick Kroll. In which he is portraying the character called George St. Geegland in Oh, Hello. This show was broadcasted on Broadway from 2016 to 2017. 

Mulaney as a vocal artist – In the famous Netflix original Big Mouth, Mulaney worked as Andrew Glouberman’s vocal artist. In 2018, he made a debut in the award-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In it he voiced Spider-Ham.

Recent Achievements – In 2019, Mulaney released a children musical comedy named John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch. It was aired on Netflix. This show was praised universally. In 2020, he received two nominations for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.

Personal Life

July 5th, 2014 Mulaney married Annamarie Tendler (a makeup artist and lampshade artisan). In the past, he suffered drinking problems but now he is doing well. He loves football and is a die-hard fan of Chicago Bulls. Recently, he took an active part in the Black Lives Matter protest on June 2, 2020.
